To: (Senator Patty Murray and Representative Jeb Hensarling, chairpersons for the Deficit Reduction Super Committee), other members of Congress.
As concerned Americans, we urge the Super Committee and other members of Congress to put aside your partisan views and come to a deficit reduction plan that includes both cost-cutting and revenue raising measures. We recognize the need to make changes in entitlement programs and the tax code but any changes must be fair and equitable. The plan should also include actions to consolidate or eliminate government programs that are duplicative or have high costs and limited public value. The Committee and Congress must develop better mechanisms to identify and eliminate waste and fraud in government programs. We must develop ways to encourage job growth in the short term, such as work to improve our Nation’s infrastructures.
You have an enormous task before you. However, the Committee and the rest of Congress must band together to come to an agreement on a plan and a timetable to carry out the necessary measures. We expect action from our elected officials and demand the cessation of the political rhetoric and gridlock that has been the norm for this Congress.
Sincerely,
