As of July 1 2020, all registered voters in Virginia are eligible to vote early in person or absentee by mail for any reason. No excuse is required.
Before you go to vote early in person:
- Check your registration and make sure everything is correct on the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal.
- Have your acceptable ID with you. This includes voter card, driver’s license, state ID card, and more.
- Check out the sample ballots so you can get in, vote, and get moving safely. (These will be posted once available.)
There are several ways to vote absentee by mail:
- Use the Citizen Portal via the Virginia Department of Elections to submit the application electronically
- Call our office at 540-672-5262 to have the Vote By Mail application mailed to you
- Print the Vote By Mail Application and send it to us by email, fax (540)672-4872, or mail at the address below
- Military and Overseas Voters can also use the Federal Post Card Application

Dr. Cecil Snead, the new superintendent of Orange County Schools, will speak to the Lake of the Woods Democratic Club Feb. 13 on his expectations for the public school division.
The meeting will take place at 1:30 p.m. in Classroom A of the LOW Community Center. The meeting is open to the public without regard to political affiliation.
Snead, 51, became superintendent of the 5,000-student division in July 2018, succeeding Dr. Brenda Tanner, who retired. He had been superintendent of Buckingham County Public Schools for six years.
He holds an undergraduate degree in mathematics education from Virginia Tech, a master’s degree from Radford University and a doctorate in education from Virginia Tech. He taught math and computer science in Floyd and Montgomery counties before taking on administration positions in Montgomery County and later in Roanoke County.
Snead’s wife, Sherrie, is a retired English teacher. The couple has three daughters, the youngest of whom is a third-year student at the University of Virginia.
Annual picnic is June 13
The LOW Community Center will be decorated with red, white and blue June 13, when The Lake of the Woods Democratic Club hosts its annual Flag Day Membership Picnic.
The picnic will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. in Marion Pronk Hall.
A fried chicken dinner, complete with homemade side dishes and desserts, will be served. The cost of a ticket is $8. Children under 23 are free.
There will be musical entertainment and door prizes.
