Club will hear political director for Kaine campaign

Tyee Davenport

Tyee Davenport, political director for Gov. Tim Kaine’s campaign for the U.S. Senate, will address the club on the progress of the campaign at its July 19 meeting.

Ms. Davenport will answer questions about the Kaine campaign and suggest ways in which club members can support Gov. Kaine. His election is a key factor in keeping the Senate under Democratic control.

The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Lower Level of the Lake of the Woods Clubhouse. Guests are welcome, regardless of political affiliation.

Ms. Davenport has served as deputy political director at the Democratic Party of Virginia since April 2010. Previously, she worked as the Richmond and Hampton Roads political director for the Jody Wagner campaign for lieutenant governor. In 2008, she served as political outreach organizer for the state party’s Coordinated Campaign, where she assisted Congressman Bobby Scott’s campaign in Virginia’s 3rd Congressional District. Davenport also brings eight years of private sector experience where she worked for a Fortune 500 logistics company.

Ms. Davenport is a graduate of Strayer University and holds a master’s degree from Virginia Tech.

Leading the way to the president’s re-election

Happy participants in the June 6 campaign phone bank

Volunteers for President Obama’s re-election campaign, including many from the LOW Democratic Club, are fired up and determined not to leave a single Orange County vote unturned in the November election.

Two phone banks have already been held by the North Orange Obama Team, resulting in contacting more than 800 people asking for help in assuring the president another four years to finish the job he has so successfully begun.

A voter registration drive has been scheduled outside the Food Lion Store in Locust Grove on June 9 and the Orange County volunteers are going to participate in a nationwide rally for the president on June 16.

About a dozen campaign volunteers participated in a phone bank conducted June 6 at Ken Martin’s house, resulting in more than 500 contacts and recruiting more Orange County volunteers.

Participating in the phone bank were  Amy Peters, Charles Brewer, Helen Brewer, Sheila Clark, Vera Jackson, Nancy Arnold, Kerry Sipe, Jim Donovan, Fay Potter, Carla Loban, Zach Loban, Ken Martin and Marti Martin.

Despite the thrilling turnout for events so far, there are still lots of opportunities to get involved. Call one of the project captains below to find out how you can be a part of the next event:

Wayne Powell will be guest at annual Flag Day picnic

Good food, good company and good times will be the order of the day when The Lake of the Woods Democratic Club hosts its annual Flag Day Membership Picnic June 13 at Sweetbriar Park.

Wayne Powell, candidate for the Congress from Virginia’s 7th District, will be a special guest at the event. He’ll speak briefly about his determination to help restore a dysfunctional U.S. Congress.

The picnic will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the covered Lion George Lewis Pavilion in Sweetbriar Park.

Everyone’s invited to the picnic, which has become a much-anticipated early summer tradition at the Lake. There will be hamburgers and hot dogs and a groaning board of other all-America fare, such as potato salad, baked beans, casseroles, side-dishes, watermelon and red-white-and-blue cupcak es.

There’s no charge for admission, but donations to defer expenses are encouraged and appreciated.

After everyone has had plenty to eat, there will be patriotic program, beginning with a flag ceremony and featuring the club’s own “Demettes,” a crowd-pleasing bevy of divas belting out a repertoire of lively and hilarious songs, usually with political overtones.

Raffle tickets will be sold on a lovely wine basket, including two bottles of good wine, wine glasses, candle, two Democratic donkey pins, wine glass tags, gourmet crackers and other surprises.

All fired up and ready to go!

Members step up to help re-elect the president

A field organizer for the Obama campaign explained to club members at the April 19 meeting how they can get involved in helping to re-elect the president.

Club members responded enthusiastically, signing up to conduct recruiting campaigns, voter registration campaigns, neighborhood canvassing and phone banks to help guarantee success in November.

Annie Roberts, a field director for the campaign, said preparations for the 2012 election are earlier and more extensive even than the precedent-setting successful effort in 2008. She said plans are for Orange County to be assigned its own field coordinator and that voluntees would be organized to conduct regular campaign events in and around Locust Grove.

Ms. Roberts showed an inspiring video about volunteer efforts on behalf of the president all across Virginia and then presented a slide show showing how volunteers would be organized in neighborhoods throughout the Commonwealth to increase efficiency and maximize success.

Teams comprising canvass coordinators, phone bank coordinators, data coordinators and others will work in Lake of the Woods, Locust Grove and Flat Run to insure that the president’s message reaches every eligible voter.

Members of the LOW Democratic Club rushed to sign up for the various team assignments and aren’t wasting any time in getting started. Club members will participate in a voter registration effort in Locust Grove on April 28.
