Tri-county rally for Abigail Spanberger is Aug. 11

A tri-county rally in support of the campaign of Abigail Spanberger for Congress will take place at the Lake of the Woods Community Center from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11.

The Democratic Committees of Orange, Culpeper and Spotsylvania counties are joining with the LOW Democratic Club in sponsoring the event.

A minimum donation of $20 to the campaign will be collected, but donations of greater amounts will be welcome. Light refreshments will be available.

Abigail Spanberger will be present and will address attendees.

Club hosts 7th District candidates

The three outstanding candidates seeking the Democratic nomination from Virginia’s 7th Congressional District will visit Lake of the Woods to meet voters and to answer their questions.

The event will take place in the Lake of the Woods Community Center on Sunday, March 18. A meet-and-greet session will begin at 1:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 2 p.m. The session is open to the public, and everyone is invited.

The club’s Special Events Committee will serve light refreshments.

The three candidates vying for the right to mount a campaign against the re-election of extremist Tea Party darling David Brat are Helen Alli of Richmond, Abigail Spanberger of Glen Allen and Dan Ward of Orange County. The nominee will be chosen in an open primary election on June 12. The general election is scheduled for Nov. 6.

Alli

Helen Alli is a veteran of the U.S. Army and has been trained to protect and serve our country. She began serving her community as a volunteer at a battered women’s shelter helping women begin again and became the league coordinator for the U.S. Tennis Association. She is a successful businesswoman in the health care industry and was appointed to the board of the Richmond Economic Development Authority.

Spanberger

Abigail Spanberger began her career of public service as a federal law enforcement officer working narcotics and money laundering cases with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Following her love of country, public service and languages, Abigail joined the Central Intelligence Agency as an operations officer She traveled and lived abroad collecting intelligence, managing assets and overseeing high-profile programs in service to the United States.

Dan Ward
Ward

Dan Ward was raised in Central Virginia and attended Virginia public schools before accepting an NROTC scholarship to Vanderbilt University. After graduation, Dan spent 25 years in the Marine Corps, flying attack jets in combat missions over Iraq Bosnia and Kosovo. Col. Ward later served as a senior military adviser in President Obama’s State Department, where he ran cooperative defense programs in Syria and Ukraine before retiring in late 2014. As a civilian, Dan pilots 777 aircraft.

Club supports free clinic

Christmas luncheon ends successful year

The Lake of the Woods Democratic Club will celebrate a year marked by election victories and successful public service projects with its annual Christmas luncheon at noon on December 6 at the Generals’ Quarters Restaurant at Locust Grove Town Center.

New officers for 2018 will be introduced at the luncheon and members who contributed to the club’s success during 2017 will be recognized.

The cost of the luncheon is $25, including the meal, taxes and gratuity. Entrée choices are herb-crusted chicken with pasta, pan-seared fresh Atlantic Salmon with teriyaki glaze and saffron rice or herb-balsamic marinated flank steak and baked potato. There is also an appetizer choice of house salad or hearty chicken corn chowder. The choice of dessert is carrot cake or flourless chocolate cake. The deadline for reservations is Nov. 24.

Reservations can be made by sending a check made out to “Jim Donovan” to Jim Donovan, 2101 Lakeview Parkway, Locust Grove, Va. 22508. Menu choices should be noted with reservations.

Noted political scientist to speak

Dr. Stephen J. Farnsworth

Dr. Stephen J. Farnsworth, professor of political science and international affairs and director of the Center for Leadership and Media Studies at the University of Mary Washington, will speak on “The State of Virginia Politics” at the Lake of the Woods Clubhouse on Sunday, Sept. 24.

The event will begin at 2 p.m. in the Lower Level of the LOW Clubhouse. Members will gather 30 minutes before for refreshments and socializing.

Dr. Farnsworth is the author of five books and is this year’s recipient of the Virginia Outstanding faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

One of the few political scientists who focus on Virginia politics, Dr. Farnsworth’s research has direct policy implications for both politicians and the news media. He handles hundreds of media contacts a year on local, state and international matters, and appears in or on such outlets as C-SPAN, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, National Public Radio and PBS News Hour.

He holds a Ph.D. and a master’s degree from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree from both the University of Missouri and Dartmouth College.

Dr. Farnsworth’s latest book is called “The Global President: International Media and the U.S. Government.”
